Northern Guilford Middle School Northern Guilford Middle School is oriented on an east-west axis to maximize the southern solar potential for daylighting, passive solar design, solar hot water heating, and photovoltaic applications. The solar water heating system installed by Honey Electric Solar includes 10 solar hot water collectors. This system provides approximately 75% of the hot water for the school, the majority of which is used for the cafeteria. Photovoltaic systems, also installed by Honey Electric Solar, are incorporated into the science courtyard as an educational tool and to provide electricity for the greenhouse. A separate, remote photovoltaic system lights the main school sign. The aerators in the wetland areas are also powered using photovoltaics. Many of the school's sustainable features, including the solar hot water and PV systems, are highly visible as well as interconnected through computer monitoring systems. |
